Tips on "Eqing" a bass amp
home

Bass is a very dynamic instrument.Improper use of the EQ on an amp will make your sound very unbalanced (ie the E or B string will be twice as loud as the G string).

Bass amps are designed to sound good. EQ should be used to solve problems in the room you are playing. It should not create problems.

Active vs. Passive EQ.

Active EQ allows you to boost or cut a frequency. Passive EQ only allows you to cut a frequency. When you boost a frequency, you also boost any noise in the signal. This is the primary downside to active EQ. CUT BEFORE YOU BOOST. It is quieter.

Set the amp flat (no amp boost or cut) and adjust the bass for your best sound.

Start with the treble and work your way down to the bass controls. Everyone seems to be drawn to that all mighty bass knob first. DonBt do it. Be strong to the temptation of evil.

Considerations of EQ

Set your EQ at performance volumes. At low volumes, your ears donBt hear bass and treble frequencies well. If you set your tone at low volume, you will turn up and your ears will start to hear more bass and treble than you anticipated.

Your sound is different 20 feet infront of your amp. You will probaly need to set your eq with more midrange to be heard through the band. -- EG
