Bass Amplifier Types

Combo Amplifier - Combo amps are so-named because they combine the amplifier and speakers into one cabinet. They are convenient to set up because no additional speakers need to be connected before the amp can be used. Also, the speaker cabinet design usually well matched since they are designed as a single unit.

Head - In this configuration, the amplifier is separate from the speaker cabinet. The box containing the amplifier and all its controls is called the head. The head usually sits on top of the speaker cabinet. Separating the components of the amplifier allows selecting and matching the speaker cabinet to the head by the player.

1X15 Speaker Cabinet - Bass speaker cabinets are available in many configurations. One of the more popular designs contains a single 15" speaker in a optimally designed cabinet. 15" speakers are associated with deep, round lows and rolled off (reduced) mids and highs. Since fifteen inch speakers are generally slower to respond that smaller speakers, they deliver a somewhat less punchy attack. These are popular with reggae players, country players, hard rock players and in combination with other cabinet configurations.

4X10 Speaker Cabinet - By dividing the signal load among four, smaller (10 inch) speakers, the attack response is dramatically increased. Due to a phenomenon called phase coupling, in a well designed cabinet, bass frequency response in increased as well. This configuration has become the mainstay among most players. It has a much better mid and high frequency response as well as resulting in more clarity and presence. This cabinet is popular with funk, fusion, rock and pop players. It is appropriate for all styles.
