And, finally, we will be "threading" the message boards and adding an index! The overwhelming support we get from all of you who visit PlayMusicFree means more to us than you could possibly know. Thanks, Joe - PlayMusicFree

I have a Jackson professional guitar. When I play the 3rd string on the sixteen fret it slightly hits the next fret. How can I fix that. My othey question is when i change the strings on my guitars the bridge seems to go up as i tune my guitar. I added another spring in the back, but when I purchased the guitar it only had 3 springs. How can I tune my guitar and avoid the bridge going up just by using 3 springs?

I'm just 16 and beginning the bass. I have a problem with each of my fingers being on a fret. My left ring finger and pinky have a REALLY hard time reaching the 3rd and 4th fret ( like in practicing Chromatic ex.#1)I mean, I have my bass in the right position and right hand position, and my thumb is in the right spot, too. It hurts my fingers ( ring and pinky ) to reach the frets...any ways to help this??!!

Ok the product you are asking about is actually made by a company called twanger. The model for it is the PraxAx. I bet Modern Guitar in Reno has it or they can get it for you pronto. Essentially the thing is a piece of board with strings on it and you strap it to your belt. Objective being you can work on right hand chops whenever.

I have a question.. I haven't quite mastered the concept of palming. I can do it and all but I think I'm doing something wrong. First off I had my right hand looking like one of the don't pictures you have on your site but then that poses another problem for me palming it. My upstrokes either aren't clean sounding at all no matter how hard I try. And so I guess my question is can you explain to me a proper way of palming it? By the way this is a great site. I have an Epiphone SG. When I play it, there is a loud screaching that is not stopped when I silence the strings. Since it screaches at all times, except when playing really hard, I don't think it's feedback. I think it may be an electrical problem but I have no idea where to start. My other guitars sound fine on the same equipment so I know i've narrowed it down to the SG. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Okay, I've heard Moby's "Extreme Ways" somewhere other than "The Bourne Identity", haven't I? Has it been on a commercial or trailor for some other movie or tv show? I'm thinking it was on the John F. Kennedy Jr. movie on FX, but I'm not quite sure. It's going to make me go nuts if I don't find out where I've heard it before, I'm usually so good with that.

Nick, Those numbers refer to the frequency of the note A. There must also be some sort of calibrate button on your tuner which will allow you to set that frequency. A-440 is considered standard which means that there are 440 cycles per second to the A pitch. Tuning to A-437, for example is slightly flatter which results in a (probably imperceptable)reduction in string tension. This will have an effect on the timbre or sound quality the guitar produces. Also, if you must tune to another instrument like a piano that is tuned flat, you'll be able to match your tuner to that pitch. I hope this helps...

HI, I play keyboard and bass guitar. Up till now I have used DI-box through PA or borrowed amps. I would like to buy an amp that would do a good job for both instruments (not necessarily at the same time). It seems that keyboard amps are very expensive, and bass guitars don't sound as good through them, as they do through a dedicated bass amp. Any suggestions? Do I really have to buy two amps? Thanks for anyone who reads this! Rgds, Glenn

The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you'll start to feel better. I play in a christian band and we play all types of music. I can't find the right heads. I play coated pinstripes on top and clear ambassoders on bottom they work great on micropones. But, in smaller venues I don't get the sound I want in front I've even gone to the extent of having a tech come tune them. I'm now asking what heads I should use I prefer coated 2 ply on tops and I don't want to change heads every time I mike them. I don't use muffling cause I like them to sing but not to much. I want a fat, full sound in front of and behind the drums. If it helps my set is mahogany, with birch and maple ply's. It's a five peice. So can you please help.

M. Lucas, I may be a little biased but after using pretty much every digital recorder out there, the Boss BR-1180 is the best digital recorder a guitar player could ask for. The BR-1180 has 8 tracks plus 2 mixdown tracks. That way, you don't have to reserve tracks for this leaving you with only 6. That is a HUGE advantage! Also, like most digital recorders out there, the BR-1180 has 8 "virtual tracks" per track allowing nondestructive multiple takes. You can also slice drum sounds and create loops, etc. One of the coolest things is the effects/modeling section. It allows you to create lush, full band recordings using just your guitar! With CD burner it's under $1,000.

Tim, Yes your Fender strat can be fitted with a floyd rose tremolo. BUT, I'd think twice before doing it. The problem is that floyd rose tremolo systems are designed to be used with guitars having a 10 1/2 inch or flatter fingerboard. Strats typically are more curved than that. And, depending on the year, can be MUCH rounder (7 1/2 inches)! The result will be high action on the outside strings and an extremely poor fitting nut. Also, doing the install the right way will cost as much as a new guitar that already has a floyd rose. I realize there are lots of great playing Fender Stratocasters out there that play great with a floyd but be careful because you can't just undo it once it's there. Let us know how it turns out.

Can anyone recommend the best Home Study Guitar program? Ideally has the following: - self taught (no instructor) - structured course progression - adequate theory and its application to guitar. - contemporary songs used to teach and practice skills. - CD audio examples at different tempos. - Ideally some video instruction - would like it to take advantage of computer to use MIDIs to supplement song learning. - could be software package if extensive enough. I have avoided the free lessons as Im guessing if they are free they dont have the quality content (especially with theory) or structure to guide me over 12 months or more of study. Some potentials are: Guitar College....www.Guitarcollege.com Interactive Guitar....www.playprosoft.com Guitar Magic II......www.sdgsoft.com your comments would be greatly appreciated. RK

hi, having trouble with my floyd rose. i have read and tried the instructions on this website, but they aren't helping much. no matter how many times i reduce the tension of the springs, the string tension is still very tight and the tremelo won't go down and lay flat. it stays in the same place (a 45 degree angle) with the arm about an inch away from the body. my ibanez is an rg470. i was wondering if there was anything i was doing wrong or if there is something wrong. i just got it today (i bought it used) and wanted to replace the nasty, ratty strings that came with it. thanks!

I am looking for some info on a guitar that was given to me by a friend of the family. This particular gentleman moved into an old house and found the instrument in the attic. The name on the headstock is "Dana". I have seen and played Dana guitars before and they have almost exclusively been very poor sounding. The reason why I'm asking for help is because, lo and behold, this guitar kicks --s!! The body is kinda like a Telecaster, but is actually closer to a Wolfgang (Eddie's guitar). The body is cream color with a white pick guard. The electronics are very basic, with only one tone and one volume knob. The pickup is a single coil located near the neck. I'm pretty sure it's a single coil, but the freaking thing is the size of a humbucker! the pickup is encased in a chrome cover of sorts, with ventilation holes on each side. I had to laugh when I saw it because I thought,"oh great, a crappy Dana". After I plugged it into my Marshall JCM800 though, I almost fell over! Imagine a Les Paul using the bridge pickup and you'll come close to the sound. I absolutely love this guitar. It simply will not go out of tune and it's a dream to play. Sorry for being so long winded, but I get excited easily. What I'm looking for is the model, year, posible websites for info, etc. thanks for any help you can provide.

I've been playing guitar for a couple years now and one thing I've never learned, but always seen and heard done, is a strumming technique where the player seems to speed up his strumming about twice as fast or maybe more for a very brief period time, usually while changing chords. Cesar - The mixolydian track IS mixolydian which is a dominant tonality (1, 3, 5, b7). I feel that a more illustrative example could've been created by using straight A7 groove. That would've left no question as to the basic modal function of the scale. You might want to try it by recording some kind of A7 track and playing A mixolydian over that. Also, watch for more jam tracks to be posted in the near future. - Joe

Hello, my name is Jennifer, I am a 19 year old college student and I have recently become very interested in learning to play the banjo. I really know nothing about them other than that I love their twangy sound. I think that there are two main types of banjo playing, old fashioned and bluegrass. Can somebody tell me the difference and what type of banjo I need to play? I do know that there are many different types of them. One of my friends plays the guitar and another is learning the fiddle, I would love to learn how to play the banjo so that we could have our own little fun band, kinda dixie chicks style. I know that I want to get a cheap banjo, because #1. I live on a college kid budget and #2. I want to make sure that I like it before I spend too much money on one. Mostly I just want to have fun with it. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hey Jay. The soreness in your arm is probably just because it is getting used to a new position. You might also be grabbing to hard, or maybe your hand is sticking out to much or to close to the frets. That's what happened to me. Your thumb should stay anchored a little bit from the top of the neck, in the center. Anyway, hope this helped. Jenn

The only thing I am beginning to notice is that when I play, my left arm feels very confined and twisted and after a while, my left wrist gets sore. Are there different length guitars or is this just bad form? Tips for someone just learnin are appreciated also. Thanks.

Raymond - Scales and Modes in the Beginning is one of the best books I've seen on the subject. As a resource for your Cuatro studies, well, theory is theory and scales are scales regardless of what instrument you're playing. You'll have to do considerable adapting of scale patterns to the tuning of your instrument and for the 4 extra stings. I'd recomend it though, because A) you'll learn a lot about the mechanics of your cuatro and B) you'll understand music theory in a very hands-on way rather than simply connecting the dots. Keep us informed as to your progress... good luck! ...Joe

I am trying to teach myself to play the Puerto Rican Cuatro. It is a small guitar about 36 inches long with 10 steel strings played with a pick. The strings are doubled up like a 12 string guitar, and it is played in a similar manner like a mandolin. The strings are tuned starting from the 5th to the 1st string - B E A D G. Would the book "Scales and Modes In the Beginning" be a good book to practice scales on my 10 string guitar? I believe studying scales is a basic fundamental part of learning to play any musical instruments. Listening to the music played with the cuatro, I hear many scale progressions, which brought me to the conclusion that I should first start studying scales.

Hello. My name is Mario Aleman. I have a question regarding the BOSS BR-8. I've had the unit for about a year now. I've used the unit for recording music demos. Until recently, I'd been recording direct to the unit(guitar, mics, bass, drum machine, you name it, all direct via hi-z)with no problems whatsoever in the sound quality. Three months ago I purchased an ART Studio Pro mic pre and an AKG C3000B condensor mic. to record acoustic guitar parts--that is when the problem started. Everytime I use the mic pre with the mic. the signal gets too "fuzzy", or distorted, like it's clipping but the level on the BR-8 is not even at -12dB! As a matter of fact, the input gain on the machine is barely at 8 or 9 o'clock. This only happens when I use the mic combo with the BR-8. I've tried the same combo with a TASCAM 424 analog recorder with beautful results--no distortion whatsoever. I've also tried it with a CARVIN 16 ch. mixer with its own phantom power and also with great results. Only with the BR-8 do I get this "clipping problem. I've read the manuals for all the instruments, followed the guidelines, geez, I've been home recording for about 12 years now, and I've never had a problem this bad regarding level distortion. In the beginning, I sent the mic pre to ART for a "check up"--came back "healthy" with no prblems at all. I then sent the mic. to AKG for the same tests--came back with a clean bill of health. I finally sent the BR-8 to Roland for inspection, twice. It had all the inards replaced with new ones, but the problem still persists. I'm at a complete loss--don't know what to do--I really dig the machine but if I can't use my mic, what good is it? I'm thinking maybe it is some design flaw or program flaw, whatever it is, I can't seem to make it work. I wonder if other BR-8 users have had the same problem? Help. Thanks for listening. Paul - I haven't been able to find anything that your son could use in a bibliography but the sources I have place the snare drum a little after 800AD. We all know that the drums seem to have come from Africa, but it was the Romans who, by stretching goat intestines accross the bottom of a sort of tambourine head, seem to have introduced the concept of the snare. This, they say evolved into the modern snare drum. I'll keep looking and also check with some of the drum makers for something more substantial. Good Luck!

Nick- There are many ways to mic a drumset. It really depends on how many mics you have (or can afford). The AKG D112 sounds great for the bass drum. Cut a hole in the rear drumhead and place the mic inside for optimum response. The Shure SM57 will sound good on your snare and toms. You could try the AKG C-418 or 419, but you'll need a mixing console that can power them. Try a small condenser mic like the AKG C-1000 or the Shure SM81 for overheads. Place them in the shape of an X, above your head, to get a good stereo image. Be sure to experiment and HAVE FUN! Bri

Hi again Rudy, If you do make it out to Reno sometime, please visit one of our Modern Guitar stores. The manager of the Reno store got his music degree from the University of Miami. GREAT school! Anyway, which bass depends largely on your interests. Unless you intend to play chord/melody solo type stuff, I'd rule out the 6-string. Many funk/slap players prefer the 4-string over the 5-string because the low B doesn't obscure access to the low E. The 5-string is becoming pretty standard these days. The low B sounds great when you really want some bottom end and the instrument is widely used in virtually every style of music. Some people find the the lowest string, being something other than E is a little wierd to get used to. I don't think that's much of an issue though. If you want, call (877)852-1982 and talk to Erik, Fernando or Louie. This is the Reno Modern Guitar. They'll be happy to answer your questions and it's even toll free. (Erik is the guy who went to U of M) Good luck and keep in touch! Joe

Rudy - If you want to play bass, I recomend getting right on the bass. The bass functions very differently in terms of it's role in a band. So, while playing guitar will probably be fun, it won't necessarily make you a better bass player.

Wilko - Your wierd sound is radio frequency (RF) interference being picked up by the coils in you pickups. This is caused by inadequate shielding surrounding them. Sometimes, you'll have the same same problem using cheap, badly shielded cables, too. Since the sound changes when you move the instrument around, I'd still say it's the pickups. The fix could be as simply having your instrument checked to make sure it's properly grounded. Otherwise, the pickup cavity, covers and pickguard (if there is one) will need to shielded with copper foil. There's stuff that can be sprayed in there too, but it's not as effective and makes a mess. Shielding and/or ground problems can be a pain, unfortunately. Let us know how it goes... Joe

Ian- There are many reputable drum makers, including Pearl. My question to you is whether you're looking for a complete drumset package (with cymbals), or just the drums and hardware. Pearl, Yamaha and Ludwig all make beautifully crafted drumsets around your price range. Another brand worthy of consideration is called CB. I had a CB kit and played it for five years. The thing is, you can get a CB kit with everything (including a Sabian cymbal package & hardshell case) for under $700. Also remember that drumhead choice and tuning techniques have a monumental effect on the sound of ANY drum. Have Fun!

Sam - Silvertone parts are pretty hard to get a hold of but I'm sure we can find your gears. Believe it or not, those silvertone guitars have become collectable so you don't want to modify it if possible. Let me know the model or call (877)852-1982 and describe it to us and we'll find the gears. If I remember right, the gears turn "backwards" on that guitar which is kind of cool.

Joey Kay - The BR-8 is a great unit, but you need to be aware that there is a replacement for the br-8 called the br-1180 (or something close to that). The new unit has more tracks, XLR inputs, and an optional CD burner. When the new one ships, I fully expect the br-8 to dissapear from the line. Nevertheless, the br-8 records 37 minutes onto one track (mono). This drops to about 5 minutes with all eight tracks full. I understand there is an upgrade to a zip250 but hardly worth it when the new br-1180 arrives. You can call us at Modern Guitar (877)852-1982 toll free for more information.

i recently discovered a silvertone guitar that my father had when he was younger, it is in decent shape, but it is missing three of the six rods that the strings are wound around... Unfortunatly, i cannot replace only those three, because the tuning keys are connected by some plate thing. I am planning on buying a whole new set of tuning keys... where would one locate an online store that sells them?

Regarding Ampeg Bass Cabinets: Ampeg doesn't really deliver low frequencies well. They have a unique sound but not a deep punchy low end. I'd look at Bergentino for a true low end. They're not cheap and a lot of people (who don't know anything) won't think it's "cool" but, if you're serious about your sound...

Hi Mike, first, the easy stuff. You'll love the Duncan Invader. Find your best price and call Modern Guitar (775)825-1982 (excuse the commercial). As for your strat, I'd think very carefully abuot replacing the nut. When a neck is slotted for a locking nut, no other one will ever fit properly. Aside from that, switching to rollers really won't make the guitar sound any better, just easier to tune. In fact, I feel that rollers actually diminish transmission into the wood because of the less secure contact and the rounding of that contact point. Pretty much everybody (Schaller, Gotoh, etc.) make a good locking machine head. I'd recomend the ones with the thumb wheel on the back rather than the slotted top. They're just easier to change strings. But, really, think twice about changing that nut. It sounds like you've graduated beyond the floyd and maybe should be considering a new guitar. Thanks - Joe

I have a Fender Fat Strat with a floyd rose on it. It is a new model, and I've decided I want to make a few changes. I want to get rid of the locking nut, but by just takingoff the locks, the strings do not sit firmly, and they sound horrible. I was wondering if it is possible to simply replace the nut(preferably to a roller nut) or if it involves a new neck all together. Also, what does everyone recommend for locking tuning pegs, and has anyone used a Seymour Duncan Invader?? Thanx!!!!

Ricky - What do you want the computer to do with your Valve FX? It can be used to do midi patch changes and, I believe recieve continuous controller data. Other than that, you could use outside software like Cakewalk to record your guitar with or without the Valve FX. More modern processors will actually load sounds right off the internet and have cool programming functions for your computer but the Valve is a little early for that. However; the Valve FX is a great sounding preamp! Have fun!

Shawn, We've tested the "Matt Smith Modes" pages and find no issue with the code that could likely lead to a problem in your browser. Could you please let me know what operating system your computer runs (windows, linux, macintosh etc...) and the content of error messages if any. It could be that .wav files are taking a long time to load giving the impression that your computer locked up. Possibly, you don't have a player for the stuff and your computer doesn't handle it well. Let me know and I'll try to help. Thanks for the heads up.

I like how you break down scale and chord theory by basing everything off of Major, minor and Dominant scales and chords. But what about subdominant and diminished chords, etc? Don't these chords have an equally important role. Also, how much should a student focus on the major scale as the source of chords and progressions? I mean, I understand that once you assimilate the way that songs are built from the qualities of a scale you can apply that to any type of key. On the other hand, I still find it hard to play naturally in a given major key without having to think it through a little. Shouldn't I devote an equal amount of time to learning the scale positions for minor and other scales? Any help would be awesome!

Katie, at the risk of sounding like an ad, the guitars at 99dollarguitars.com are great. If you want an acoustic, get the Jasmine S-35 and for electric, the Hondo H2. They're only 99 bucks and they're brand new with a lifetime warranty. toll free (800)761-7043. Good Luck!

I@ve just been given an H+H bass amp. It sounds great but intermittently the sound fades to a low volume. If I switch it on and off a couple of times it comes back to the original volume. Any ideas what I can do to fix it? Roy.E

Re: Jack... Hi-Hats are loaded with different sound capabilities. Try experimenting with rudiments (Paradiddles, Flam Paradiddles, Open Double Stroke Rolls, etc.) while also playing with different areas of the cymbals. The bell sound, the "taper area" sound, and the edge sound are all unique. A good way to start is to play a smooth, open roll on the taper (middle) area and do nothing but change the foot pressure on the pedal. You'll be amazed by the different tones and pitches. Also, try to find a copy of "Mr. Hi Hat" by Max Roach. It's the most famous hi-hat solo ever recorded. Have fun!

Mike, Typically, you play individual notes on a bass rather than chords and yes, they are the same. Since an upright bass is fretless it is more difficult to visualize the fingerboard, however.

Robb, D is the flat 7th of E minor making an inverted voicing for an E minor 7 chord. Other chords may or may nor work depending on whether or not D is a chord tone to that chord.

Re: Ben Franks...Many things contribute to a "pro" vocal sound. Ideally, it all starts with putting an exeptional singer in front of a great microphone in a great sounding room. Then, along the signal path, you'll typically find high end tube preamps and a number of effects. These include (but are not limited to) compression, reverb, and delay. Heavily effected vocal sounds are also acheived by experimenting with equalization, pitch shifting, chorus effects, and just about anything you can dream up. The key is to use your imagination and have fun exprimenting with whatever gear you have. Digitech makes some great sounding, affordable gear for vocal processing.
