Bass String Crossing Exercise
This exercise will help you to develope precision and control over the bass. You will benifet greatly from daily practice of this exercise regardless of your skill level. It is likely that you will find this exercise more difficult to play than most of the grooves you will be called on to play in a band. That's exactly the point. Practicing at a higher level than you play in a band will help you to focus on time and groove rather than fumbling with your fingers. In no time, you'll be playing complex grooves as easily as flipping a coin.
This exercise is great for developing "slap" rhythms. Try to apply any rhythm, groovy phrase or lick that you play regularly to this exercise. Focus on developing control and the groove.
Practice this and all exercises with a metronome! It's the bass players primary responsibility to hold down the time feel. Regular practice with a metronome will help you to better lock in with the drummer. When playing any bass line, lock in, groove, keep time, groove, lock in groove, groove, groove. Good Luck! Have Fun!
