The following six lessons will teach you how to develop left-foot independence on the hi-hat. Lessons one and two deal with quarter note chicks, lessons three and four with offbeat chicks, and lessons five and six with eighth note chicks on the hi-hat. The Hi-hat can be played with heel up or heel down technique. It's a good idea to practice both, since different articulations on the hi-hat can be achieved. Master the independence exercises before moving on to the grooves.
