Drum Set 101

This section is designed to give the beginning drummer the basic independence needed to play simple grooves. The first exercise will get your left and right hands moving together in the same manner that they will be while playing actual drum grooves. The second exercise is designed to give you some basic independence between your right hand and right foot, or left hand and left foot if you're left handed. Once you have mastered the two coordination exercises, move on to the grooves. Remember to take it slow, and count out loud. One trick I like to use when learning a new groove, is to work out the hi-hat and bass drum parts first, and then add the snare drum part second. Repeat each groove several times, using both your hi-hat and ride cymbal before moving on to the next one. GO SLOW!
