Peoples Roles in a Band (Ensemble playing)
An ensemble is defined as a group of complementary parts that contribute to a single effect. Put simply, the band is not about you. It is about everyone.
In most forms of music, there is a melodic lead voice and the rest of the band accompanies that lead. In a band the lead might be a vocalist. In a jazz group that lead might be the melody or a soloist. Most people naturally understand the role of “lead”. When you are the lead, you are the center of attention. Most problems arise not from the lead, but from the accompaniest. To be a good ensemble player you have to do everything in your power to support and help the lead voice or instrument.
Drums - the drummer carries the responsibility for the time. The drummer also controls the intensity of the music. No one has the dynamic control of the drummer.
Bass - a good bassplayer is not noticed until they are not playing. Their primary responsibilities are time keeping and harmony.
Chordal instruments - create the harmony
Lead - plays the melody, sings the melody, or plays a solo
Normally roles in an ensemble are not that clearly defined. Everyone has a responsibility to the time and the harmony of the group. Remember, if you want to do a solo act, do a solo act. Ensemble playing is a team sport.
