Scale Exercise - Hannon

home

This exercise is adapted from a classic exercise from the "Hannon Virtuoso Pianist." For most players, it is frustrating to learn until the logic of the note sequence becomes natural. It is; however, an absolute must learn. Practicing this exercise using all scale patterns will help you to develop independence more rapidly than most other exercises.

The note sequence is a scale, played from the root, then skipping the second note and playing the next 3. Then, descend to the note you skipped and repeat the sequence. Numerically, that's: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 5, 4, 3, - 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4, - 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 7, 6, 5, etc... Descending, simply reverse the sequence. Have fun with it and remember to use your pinky and alternate picking!
