The Effects of the Headstock
blues4kids.com
Believe it or not, the headstock
of a guitar can have a huge impact on the way the instrument will function.
Intonation and sound transfer are greatly enhanced by making sure that the headstock
is properly designed. Since most guitar makers consider their headstock shape
as a trademark, often function becomes a secondary consideration to its shape.
Let's take a look at several guitar headstocks and analyze their properties.

This is a rather
famous (and much copied) guitar headstock. You can't see from the straight
on camera angle, but it is tilted back around 14 degrees. That's good. The
only potential problem with this design is that the strings don't run in
a straight line to the posts leading to possible tuning problems if the
nut isn't cut perfectly. That said, it is a tried design that has enjoyed
great market success. Just make sure the strings aren't binding in the grooves
and this will be a great design. |

This is basically
the same headstock (although reversed). The locking nut solves the potential
problem with strings hanging up. For practical purposes, reversing the headstock
doesn't effect the sound. Some players find it a hassle to restring, however.
But, if you like the look, go for it. |

This headstcok tilts
(so do the ones pictured above) back a few degrees. This increases the pressure
the strings exert on the nut. It is generally believed that this improves
sound transfer into the neck. sound transfer into the neck. Also, this minimizes string vibration on the
tuning side improving sustain. Although the picture doesn't show it, the
strings don't run straight from the nut to the pegs so the nut has to be
perfectly cut (it should be anyway) to minimize tuning problems. |

This headstock is
designed to run straight with no tilt at all. To improve sound transfer,
the binding posts (where the strings are wound on) have been staggered to
give the effect that it has been angled. The strings run straight and, since
it is one piece of wood, this arrangement is very durable. |
