The Musicman Sterling Bass is Totally Unbelievable!

Classic looks, astonishing sound, and incredible playability the MusicMan Sterling is one amazing instrument. The Sterling is a direct descendant of the ‘70's Stingray bass. The Stingray was the next step in the evolution of the electric bass by Leo Fender. I think of the Sterling as the next step in the evolution of the Stingray. The Sterling has a smaller body and a thinner neck than the Stingray. The body is made of ash and finished in a glossy polyester offered in a zillion cool colors. The neck is maple with a rosewood or maple fingerboard. If fretless is your choice, your fingerboard will be pau ferro. The headstock retains that classic MusicMan 3+1 design but is more compact. The machine heads are full sized Schallers with tapered posts. The neck is thin and fast at the nut.

The bass is very easy to play.

The electronics in the bass are amazing. The three way switch offers many combinations of sounds. Both coils in series gives that classic meaty MusicMan punch and growl. The center position is a single coil coupled with a phantom coil making this position hum free (pretty cool). Both coils in parallel gives that big scooped no mid tone to die for(thumb guys and gals will love this setting). The bass also has a three band active eq with bass, mid, and treble. Combining all the pickup combinations with all that eq gives unlimited choices of sounds.

This bass is great for all styles. From rock to regae to country to jazz, this bass can do it all.

The most amazing thing about this instrument is the attention to detail. The finish was flawless, the neck joint was perfect, the frets were evenly seated and the action was so low, I had to raise it for my playing style. That might not sound like a big deal, but I play with low action! The bass is about perfect.

In an era where $2,500 basses are common, it is nice to see a professional axe at about half that. The MusicMan Sterling is an amazing value and possibly the last bass you’ll buy.
